The Sheep Detectives is for everyone.

It is challenging, entertaining, and heartfelt.

Shepherd George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) loves his flock, and every night reads them murder mysteries. They understand more than he assumes.

When he is murdered, they move into action, led by strong-willed, canny Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The flock has different personalities; their quest has various levels. It all comes together.

The Sheep Detectives is an intriguing international project. It is an adaptation by Brooklyn-born screenwriter Craig Mazin of a 2005 novel by German female author Leonie Swann.

It is set in rural England, and was shot in Surrey and other countryside localities. A first-rate international cast of actors give the sheep voices and dimensions.

Kyle Balda, born in Tucson, Arizona, directs with aplomb.

The producers Christopher Miller and Phil Lord deserve special recognition. They also produced Project Hail Mary.

Both Project Hail Mary and The Sheep Detectives are bringing audiences back to theaters. They are providing satisfying, quality entertainment to an audience looking for it. That's a major achievement.
